Robert Sangster yesterday encouraged Sheikh Mohammed to ''take a gamble'' and supplement the One Thousand Guineas winner, Cape Verdi, for the Derby.

The filly's breeder, and former owner, reckons the Classic winner could prove to be one of the best horses he has ever produced. However, he said: ''We've got to see the trials and Godolphin has City Honours in the Dante. But if Cape Verdi were mine now, I would take a gamble.''

Cape Verdi was promoted to Oaks favouritism following her impressive defeat of Shahtoush at Newmarket. However, with Godolphin rating their fillies superior to the colts, a Derby entry - costing #75,000 - could be considered if no other challenger emerges from the big-race trials.

Sangster said: ''When I saw her win I felt very sad that she is no longer mine. But I've got to make a budget. I have overheads of #7m and I won't get that from prize-money. I've got to sell at the yearling stage, once in training or as broodmares.''
