RANGERS remained unmoved by speculation emanating from the south following Paul Gascoigne's fine display in England's 0-0 draw with Italy in Rome at the weekend. No-one at Ibrox was prepared to discuss suggestions that the midfield man would be heading back to London - with Spurs the favoured buyer - because it would ease his personal problems.

My understanding is that no bid has been received from Spurs or anyone else for the player and that, until that situation prevails, Rangers will not enter into any debate about his future.

Gascoigne indicated only 10 days ago that he was happy in Glasgow and pointed out that he was only 50 minutes away by air from London and his wife, Sheryl, and son, Regan. He made it clear that he would be content to finish his career in Scotland but the word from England is that seeds of doubt have been placed in his mind, despite the fact that he signed an extension to his contract in the summer.

However, Gascoigne trained as normal at Ibrox yesterday and it seemed that business was as usual.

The brilliance of the wayward player has never been in doubt, even if his effectiveness in a Euro-pean context with Rangers has been queried, but the core to the revised speculation - it is a hardy annual, after all - may be in remarks attributed to England team manager Glenn Hoddle.

The former Spurs player and Chelsea manager is reported to have suggested that Gascoigne's lack of stamina was a con-sequence of playing in the Scottish premier division, with the implication being that a return to the English Premiership would be to his advantage.

Spurs, who are understood to have had an offer of close to #4m for the player turned down in May, are in the midst of some speculation themselves with manager Gerry Francis under a great deal of pressure. In those circumstances, it must be doubtful if the White Hart Lane club would be prepared to offer as much as the #5m indicated in some reports.

Meanwhile, Richard Gough yesterday re-signed for the club from Kansas City Wizz and immediately pledged to help extend the Ibrox club's record-equalling run of nine Scottish championship successes.

''I'd love to help Rangers to 10 in a row this season,'' said Gough, whose new two-year contract will see him through to his thirty- seventh birthday.

qHibs are ready to snap up Icelandic youngster Bjarnolfur Larusson before the end of the week. The under-21 striker has been on trial for the past week at Easter Road. The club could re-kindle their interest in Austrian midfielder Arnold Wetl if he picks up his fitness level.

qDundee midfielder Darren Magee will be out for a month after discomfort following an appendix operation. Dens defender Lee Maddison is back in full training after a lengthy absence.
