David Huish and Gordon Macdonald spearheaded the Scottish challenge in yesterday's opening round of the #180,000 Belfry PGA Seniors championship.

Both fired four-under 68s to join four others in second place, two shots behind Australian leader Geoff Parslow, who crammed eight birdies into halves of 33.

Callander man Macdonald, who claimed his game was 'beginning to come together' in the last few weeks, had a bogey-free round and four birdies, one of which came close to being an eagle - at the 562yd twelfth, where the former Scottish amateur international player struck a No. 3 wood to within 5ft of the hole, but his putt for a 3 lipped out.

Huish, seeking to make amends for his failure to make the cut in defence of his Scottish Seniors championship at Dalmahoy last week, posted five birdies in halves of 34. The only blemish on the big North Berwick man's card was a dropped shot at the 448yd fifth.

SCOTS Graham Gordon, Aberdeen, and Lynn Kenny, Dunblane, failed to make it past the quarter-finals of the Belgian international junior tournament at Royal Club de Belgique yesterday.

Newmachar member Gordon put up a great fight before losing by one hole to the leading qualifier, Janne Mommo (Finland) who will play Jule Clement (Switzerland) in today's36-hole boys' final.

Kenny, the Scottish Under-21 stroke-play champion, also lost on the last green to Italy's Elena Polloni, a student at Turin University. Miss Poloni will play Lisa Holm Sorensen (Denmark) in today's 36-hole girls' final.

Athletics

CRAIG Watson won three titles on the final day of Kilbarchan Championships at Linwood Stadium. Competing in windy conditions he won the under-20 100 metres sprint, triple jump and discus championship events, with Scottish international Gary Stevenson winning the senior 100 metres sprint title into a head wind in 11.9secs and guest runner Alex McIndoe (Springburn) winning the veteran's 800 metres race in 2-05.8.

SARAH Still (Aberdeen AAC), who finished third in the recent British Isles Cup heptathlon event, won the Joy Edwards Trophy when clearing 1.63 metres in the Aberdeen High Jump Championship at Chris Anderson Stadium. Nicola Gauld was second with a clearance of 1.51 metres and guest competitor Wendy Davidson (Ellon) took third position.

THE entry deadline for Inverclyde Initiative's half-marathon in Greenock has been extended to race day, Sunday, September 12.

JASON Young (Evanton) won three events on the first day's competition of the Scottish heavyweight throwing contest at Cowal Highland Gathering at Dunoon.

He also won the 32lb Cowal stone throw with a distance of 10.20 metres. Three more Scots Martin Bell (Cardiff) 3,000m walk, Lee McConnell high jump and Malgorzata Rostek (both City of Glasgow) sprint relay have been added to and Paul Walker (City of Edinburgh) 800m has withdrawn making it ten in total, including sprinter Ian Mackie, in the GB team for the CGU International against France at Ashford, Kent today.

Meanwhile, Chris Robison (Inverclyde), anglo Neil Wilkinson (Cambuslang) and Tracey Brindley (Aberdeen), all in the Scottish team preparing for the WMRA Mountain Running World Trophy in Sabah, Malaysia next month, are in the five-strong GB squad for the Matterhorn International Race in Switzerland tomorrow.

Bobby Quinn and John Brooks, of Scotland ,have both previously finished in the top three in the 12K and 1,000m climb uphill only race near Zermatt.

Ski-ing

Blair Aitken from Ormiston, East Lothian, now in the Scottish collegiate squad, hopes to add the artificial dry slope Penicuik Glass Scottish Championship title at his local Midlothian Ski Centre, Edinburgh today to the European Junior title he won last month at High Wycombe near London.

Former winners Johnny Bainbridge from Bristol and Conor Columb from Dublin will also bid for the title again, but GB international holder Ross Green, from Falkirk, is not defending, though he could take part in the British Championship at the same venue next, month.

Tracy Archbold, from Telford, will defend the women's title from Scottish teenagers Judith Fleming, from Bridge of Weir, and Rochelle Travers, from Glasgow, who pushed her close last year.

Snooker

WORLD No.9 Matthew Stevens, from Wales, moved through to a first round clash with Alan McManus in the #185,000 Regal Masters after winning the qualifying event in Stirling yesterday.

Stevens clinched the last spot in the 12-man field for Motherwell next month when he powered to a five frames to one win against Hong Kong's Marco Fu.

Breaks of 43 and 44 helped Stevens to the opening two frames, but Fu the world No.35 knocked in a 59 break to take the third frame on an 85-0 whitewash.

Stevens though restored his two-frame cushion with a 72-0 win in the fourth and then produced a 58 break to take the next 108-1 and he wrapped up victory when he edged home 62-51 in the sixth frame.
