n Vauxhall is the first UK volume manufacturer to take the LPG route. This week it has introduced, under full warranty, dual-fuel versions of the Vectra, Omega, and the Combo van.

They have tanks for petrol and LPG, and are heavier than the standard cars, but can be switched easily between the two fuels. LPG runs with a higher fuel consumption, but costs 40p per litre.

The disadvantages are that the price premium on the Vauxhalls is #2725, that the premium will be subject to a company car driver's benefit-in-kind taxation until the end of this tax year, and that - in Scotland, anyway - LPG suppliers are few and far between.

n The Renault Megane and Clio hold the top two places as Scotland's best selling cars in 1998. In the SMTA's January-April new car registration figures they pushed the Ford Escort into third place, with the Rover 200 in fourth.

Ford is waiting for its new Focus model to come along. In the meantime there is a new Escort Finesse in the showrooms, in three-door, five-door and estate form. Prices start at #11,520.

n This year's Festival of Wheels will be in the SECC on October 16-18. As well as the stand displays, there will be an autotest, an indoor motorcycle trial, and a high-decibel ''sound off'' competition for the ICE enthusiasts.
