Glasgow Humane Society official George Parsonage, who has rescued more than 800 people from the River Clyde, was yesterday presented with the St Mungo Prize for services to the city.

He is pictured above with Lord Provost Pat Lally, who presented him with the gold medal and #1000 at a function in the City Chambers.

Mr Parsonage, 55, took over the service from his father in 1979. As well as saving drowning people he also recovers bodies from the river.

He said he was particularly proud to receive the award because it was from his native city.
