ABOUT 4000 Railtrack workers belonging to the biggest rail union, the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT), have rejected an inflation-breaking two-year pay deal and will be sending officials back to demand more.

It seems the staff, who include signalworkers who took part in a crippling strike in the summer of 1994, are intent on getting a bigger share of the huge profits (#339m last year) being made by their privatised employer.

Railtrack's ''final'' offer would have increased pay by 4.25% from April of this year, and by inflation plus 0.5% from April 1999. But in a ballot, 1860 voted against, with 703 in favour.
