N Ireland Under-21 1

Scotland Under-21 1

Manchester United midfield player Phil Mulryne earned Northern Ireland Under-21s a draw against their Scottish counterparts at McSharry Park last night.

St Johnstone's Stuart McCluskey fired the Scots ahead after 22 minutes when he met a cross from an Ian Anderson corner to drill in a low shot that beat Northern Ireland goalkeeper Roy Carroll.

However, Mulryne equalised seven minutes later with a powerful header, the midfielder connecting perfectly to head powerfully wide of Scotland keeper Stephen Robertson.

The Scots, beaten 3-0 by the Republic of Ireland in Tuesday's opening game of the triangular tournament, ought to have regained the lead after 38 minutes but Lee McCulloch was guilty of a glaring miss.

David Graham came closest to snatching a winner in a tight second half but Carroll held his close-range glancing header.

Carroll did well to hold Barry Elliott's stinging drive in the opening minute and also denied Graham with a smart save 20 minutes later.

Jeff Whitley's drive was blocked by the Scottish defence three minutes before Mulryne fired the Irish level.

q Derby County have agreed terms with Argentinian side Club Atletico Rosario Central for defender Haracio Carbonari and hope to complete a club record deal later this week.

The price of around #2.7m would exceed the #2.5m the Rams paid Notts County for defender Craig Short in 1992.

The Argentinian, who has an Italian passport, will fly into England later this week to discuss personal terms with manager Jim Smith.
