I HAVE just seen an assignment completed by a third-year student from one of the ''newer'' universities. It contains the following spelling errors:

really - rely

personal - personnel

smoother organisation - smother organisation

rehearsal - rehercil

aren't - arrant

leisure - lesure

stated - staited

roughly - ruffly

losers - loosers

occasionally - occassionally

The content of the assignment was poor, the structure of sentences and paragraphs abysmal. It passed.

In one year the author of this rubbish will receive a university degree. Are west of Scotland universities too contributing to the ''dumbing of Britain''?

Perhaps the lecturer who marked it as a pass holds an equally worthless degree?
