THREE motorcyclists and one pillion passenger were killed in four separate accidents on Scotland's roads at the weekend.

A motorcyclist who died when he failed to negotiate a left-hand bend and struck a southbound Volvo car on the A84 north of Callander at about 1.30pm yesterday was named as Gerrard Mincher, 36, of Cluny Drive, Stenhousemuir.

The road was closed for more than three hours after the accident.

Another accident occurred on the A811 road near Ballat junction, Drymen, at about noon yesterday when a motorcycle failed to negotiate a left-hand bend and struck a tree.

The pillion passenger, who received fatal injuries, was named by Central Scotland Police as Christine Fleming, 32, of Oakbank Avenue, East Calder.

The rider, Steven Swanson, 29, of the same address, was taken by helicopter to Glasgow's Southern General Hospital with leg injuries.

The road was closed for more than two hours following the accident and police said a report would be submitted to the procurator-fiscal at Stirling.

Another man died and five people were injured in a third road accident involving a motorcycle in Argyll yesterday.

The accident occurred on the A816 Lochgilphead-Oban road near to the village of Kilmartin and involved a Vauxhall Omega car being driven north and three motorcycles, being ridden south.

Six people were taken to the Mid Argyll Hospital.

One male motorcyclist died and his 18 year-old female passenger sustained multiple fractures.

Another rider suffered a serious head injury.

The names of those involved were being withheld by Strathclyde Police until relatives were informed.

Meanwhile, another motorcyclist who died after a collision involving a car near Dumfries was named yesterday as Andrew Thomson, 43, of Victoria Park, Lockerbie.

The accident happened on Saturday night on the Lockerbie road a few yards from its junction with the A75.

Mr Thomson was trapped underneath the car until released by passers-by and taken to Dumfries Infirmary where he later died.

The road was closed for almost four hours.
