A swan polluted by oil on the River Laggan in Northern Ireland is recovering at a Scottish wildlife rescue

centre.

No specialised centre for cleaning oiled birds exists in Ireland. Another bird had to be destroyed and the young female mute swan faced the same fate until volunteers ferried it across to the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals centre in Middlebank, Fife.

If the swan makes a full recovery it is intended to return it to Northern Ireland.
