A cousin of Cromwell Street killer Fred West was beginning a four-year jail term last night after being found guilty of raping one teenage girl and indecently assaulting two others.

William John Hill, 45, was convicted by a jury of sexually abusing the schoolgirls in the late 1970s and early 80s in or near his then home in Much Marcle, Herefordshire.

Birmingham Crown Court heard the father-of-three had visited West's Gloucester home frequently at the time of the offences, only ceasing the visits there when he married in 1985.

During the same period, Fred and Rosemary West were pursuing their campaign of violent sex at 25 Cromwell Street.

West Mercia Police, who conducted the Hill investigation, and Gloucester Police, who undertook the Cromwell Street inquiry, were keen to play down the connection between the two men.
