AROUND twenty British holidaymakers were injured early yesterday morning when they were evacuated from their plane after it overshot the runway while landing in Ibiza.

The Leisure International A320, with 180 passengers and seven crew on board, took-off from Manchester Airport late Wednesday night. As it landed on the holiday island at 2am the charter jet overshot the runway and an emergency evacuation was carried out.

Kate Rogers, spokeswoman for Leisure International Airways, said four escape chutes were deployed in the 90-second evacuation. She said: ''The passengers were all very shocked and taken to the terminal. They were treated for shock and 17 were taken to hospital with cuts and bruises.''

A spokeswoman for Ibiza airport said only one person remained in hospital after suffering an asthma attack.

She said that the pilot avoided a main road by turning right and stopping the plane on grass. However, Leisure International said it was currently unclear what caused the plane to overshoot the runway.

The passengers, who included two infants, were said to be carrying on with their holiday. However Leisure International said it was prepared to bring home anyone who wanted to return.
