THE Counties championship reached the halfway stage on Saturday, and of the 31 sides competing, only Lanarkshire South emerged unbeaten when they stretched their winning run to four with a 122-98 win over Ayrshire at Kilmarnock.
Lanarkshire South finished ahead on four of the six rinks, with their top scorer being former Scottish champion Robert Provan, who beat Commonwealth and world gold medalist George Adrain 26-10.
Lanarkshire's other winners were Ian Campbell, Jim McIntyre, and Jim Conway.
That victory keeps them two points clear in the South section ahead of Dumfriesshire.
They travelled to Radnor Park and crushed Dumbartonshire East 144-90, finishing with five winning rinks.
Dumfriesshire, in turn, are two points clear of Renfrewshire South, Ayrshire, Stewartry, and Dumbartonshire East.
The defending champions, Linlithgowshire, went top of the East section after a crushing 161-86 win over Borders.
Linlithgowshire have had just one losing rink since their opening week defeat at the hands of Edinburgh and Leith.
That came on Saturday when Raymond Logan lost out 24-17 to Tom Calder, but elsewhere Linlithgowshire were dominant.
Ronnie Erskine was their top scorer with a 26-shot win followed closely by John Aitken who finished a 28-8 winner over former Scottish champion Norrie Amos.
Previous East section leaders, Stirlingshire East, tasted defeat for the first time this season when they lost out 129-115 to Midlothian at Easthouses.
Last year's beaten finalists Renfrewshire West went back to the top of the West section when they edged out leaders Clackmannan and Kinross 123-122 in a nail-biter at Hawkhead, where each side had three winning rinks, while in the North section Buchan continued to lead on shots aggregate ahead of Highland and Perthshire.
All three won on Saturday with Buchan coasting to a 153-101 win over Dundee at Longside while Highland returned from Newhills with a 120-109 win over Bon Accord and Perthshire beat Angus 132-110 at Auchterarder. Results:
