STEVE REDGRAVE, Britain's four-time Olympic champion, continued his winning ways yesterday in the opening round of the World Cup in Munich.

Along with Olympic pairs partner Matthew Pinsent, James Cracknell, and enforced substitute Luka Grober, Redgrave's coxless four won their opening heat to qualify directly for tomorrow's final.

The British four came home five seconds ahead of Germany in their heat, but victory tomorrow is not assured as world bronze medallists Romania won the other heat in a much faster time.

Also making a successful start yesterday was world bronze medallist Katherine Grainger from St Andrew (Edinburgh).

She finished second in her heat of women's single sculls behind Pauline Osman, of South Africa, to qualify for today's semi-finals.

In a bizarre incident, the Russian sculler, Ivichia Fedotova, who crossed the line first, was later demoted to the back of the field when her boat was discovered to be underweight.

Leniency was shown to the Russian when it was explained that she had only taken delivery of the boat on Thursday.

With three qualifying directly from Granger's race, this did not affect her progress.

Among Granger's scalps yesterday was Trina Hansen, of Denmark, who is a former world champion and Olympic medallist.
