Scotland's swimmers came closer to filling the quota of Commonwealth Games places when David Leith and Michael Cole added their names to the list of qualifiers at yesterday's Speedo Super Grand Prix finals in Sheffield.
However, the performance of the meet came from Carnegie's Bryan Morgan with victory in the 100 metres free-style. In the heats, the 18-year-old, who is certain to be selected for both the Commonwealth Games and the European junior champion-ships this summer, broke the 14-year-old Scottish record in 51.11m.
He went marginally slower in the final, 51.26, but it was still good enough to add a win to his second place behind Britain's former world record-holder Mark Foster in the 50m free-style on Saturday.
In the same event, Leith was also inside the old record set by Paul Easter in the 1984 Olympic Games to gain his Commonwealth qualification in 51.82 in the heats. He finished sixth in 52.09 in the final.
Dundee-born Cole had achieved the necessary time in the heats, but went even faster in finishing second behind British record-holder James Hickman in the 200m medley final. The York-based 19-year-old clocked 2:06.47.
Swimming has been allocated 10 places, and eight have now met the minimum qualification. The final chance of selection will come at the Scottish championships, which take place at Glasgow's Tollcross Leisure Centre next week.
''However, performances this weekend suggest that more than the 10 could make it,'' predicted Scotland's director of swimming, Martyn Woodroffe. ''It was a very positive weekend.''
There were certainly other encouraging performances, most notably from Diana Borland (Ren 96), who came close to making the Games times in both the 100m and 200m free-style.
Hopefully, she will have gained confidence that will bring its reward at the Scottish championships.
Ian Edmond and Richard Hope, from the City of Edinburgh, and the Coventry-based Teresa Davies are others who are within striking distance, and there is now a realistic chance of the selectors' hopes that they could be facing the prospect of pleading for more tickets to Kuala Lumpur in September.
Hope appeared in the three back-stroke finals over the weekend and came closest to a medal in taking fourth place in the 200m back-stroke yesterday.
Edmond was sixth in the 100m breast-stroke, while Borland won the B final of the 100m freestyle.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
