Canon John Hopkins, Episcopalian rector; born May 17, 1914, died May 12, 1998

John Hopkins was a Welshman, educated at Llandovery College, University College Oxford, and St Michael's Theological College in Llandaff.

Ordained in 1937 for the Diocese of St David's, he was curate at Pontyberem and then at Llanedy. From 1941 until 1946 he was an Army chaplain, serving mainly in the Middle East. He was then curate at Pontardawe for three years, before becoming rector of All Saints, Jordanhill, Glasgow.

He also lectured to Episcopalian students at Jordanhill College of Education, and took Welsh services for the Welsh community in the city. In 1962 he left to become rector at Kilmacolm and Bridge of Weir, and from there he moved to St Margaret's, Newlands, in 1975, retiring in 1984.

His father had been a late ordinand in the Diocese of Argyll and the Isles, serving Duror, Portnacrois, and Lochcreran, from 1946 until 1958. It was to a former roadman's cottage, Rowantrees, at Kentallen, near Duror, that John and his wife, Vida, retired.

Here, they developed a remarkable garden and spent happy years until health problems suggested a move to Bearsden. One of John's passions was to watch rugby - understandable since he had played for Oxford on 19 occasions.

A stroke proved limiting, and a fall led to a period in hospital, where he died on May 12. John Hopkins was a Prayer Book churchman of the old school - musical, cultured, and a friend to all.

He is survived by his wife, a son, and two grandchildren.
