q SUE Bradburne, better known for her exploits over jumps, today has a rare runner on the level at Ayr. Total Tropix, formally trained in Lambourn by Brian Meehan, represents the Cupar handler in the Fenwick Maiden claiming stakes.

The filly joined her new connections shortly after coming fourth in similar company at Musselburgh earlier in the month, when she was sent off the 9-4 favourite. By the sire Saddler's Hall, Total Tropix is now with her third trainer, having been under the care of Derby-winning William Haggas, the son-in-law of Lester Piggot, as a two-year-old.

Braidwood-based Robert McKellar will be hoping the ultra consistent Davis Rock will get her head back in front in the #10,000 Tote Handicap over her favourite trip of seven furlongs.

q At Epsom on June 6, the filly Cape Verdi will be attempting to join an elite group of members of her sex who have won, or even taken part, in the Derby. Owners Godolphin will on Saturday pay #75,000 to supplement the daughter of Caerleon for the classic following favourable gallop reports.

Since 1919 only five fillies have gone to post for the Derby with the French-trained Nobiliary faring best, when finishing second to the brilliant Grundy in 1975.

The last of six fillies to win the classic was Fifinella, who beat nine rivals at 11-2 in 1916 before winning the Oaks.
