GERRY MULLIGAN QUARTET, ZURICH 1962 (SWISS RADIO DAYS JAZZ SERIES)

Aficionados of the great, late, baritone saxophonist, Gerry Mulligan should check out this hugely enjoyable recording of a 1962 set by his ace quartet featuring trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, bassist Bill Crow and drummer Gus Johnson. Highlights include Brookmeyer's jaunty composition, Open Country, the wistful Love in New Orleans and the moody, funky Subterranean Blues (from the movie The Subterraneans, in which Mulligan acted). The playing is of the highest quality throughout, even when Brookmeyer and Mulligan swap their horns for the piano.
