CONSTABLE Smiley, from Strathclyde Police, could replace Glasgow's civic logo of Mr Happy, writes Ann Donald.

The giant-sized photographic montage of friendly police-officers will be the first sight to greet the three million passengers arriving each year at Glasgow Airport.

Strathclyde Police and Glasgow Airport Ltd unveiled their promotional progeny yesterday morning. The 10ft by 4ft illuminated sign featuring happy and approachable policemen and women reads: ''Welcome to the Strathclyde Police area, a safer place to live, work and invest.''

The sign is by the ground floor escalators used by the majority of arriving passengers. It was unveiled by Strathclyde Chief Constable John Orr, Mr Paul Barlow, managing director of Glasgow Airport Ltd, and Lord Gordon of Strathblane, chairman of the Scottish Tourist Board.

Strathclyde is the first force in Britain to mount this type of promotional campaign at a major transport centre. The sign, which is reported to have cost Glasgow Airport Authority around #10,000, is hoped to be the first in a number of similar promotional displays at air, road, sea, and rail terminals throughout the area.
