Men's hockey
WESTERN Grasshopper completed their season's ambition when they added the C Division trophy to the League and Cup double to set them up for their centenary season which begins in a few weeks' time.
By their success over the past few days, Western have not only put the club's name on the European hockey map, but have won promotion to the B division of the championship.
Western's triumph when beating Slavia Prague 3-1 yesterday was, however, somewhat laboured. Kevin Squire, the Western and Scotland striker, was one of the sinners, but he made amends by scoring twice in the second half to give Western a 3-0 lead after Ulsterman Johnny McMeekin had given them the lead six minutes before half time.
Prague put in some hard work in the second half and their enterprise was ultimately rewarded three minutes from the end when Lukas Vtmazal scored their consolation goal. Results:

Athletics
MARTIN Bell, the multiple Scottish race-walking record holder, collapsed while attempting to secure the qualifying time for the Commonwealth 20,000 metres event in Italy on Sunday, hyperventillating as the result of a virus. He has thus missed being pre-selected, but has a final opportunity later this month.
qSTRATHCLYDE policeman Ian Wallace, who finished second in last month's British Police Marthon Championship, has been selected for the British team to compete in the European Police Marathon Championship in Luxembourg in September.
Bridge
THE preliminary international trials were held over two days at the weekend at the Glasgow Bridge Centre. Leading pairs: Mr and Mrs C Outred, I Howie and D Gerrard, D Sanders and M Dragic, M McGinley and K Rae, J Arthur and J Forbes, G Wood and S Gillan. These pairs go forward to final trials in September and will be joined by the six seeded pairs: L Steel and Dr A Mathison, M Cuthbertson and A McIntosh, J Murdoch and D Walker, W Innes and T F Marshall, D Drew and D Liggat, A H Duncan and D Piper.
The Scottish ladies team to play in the four-cornered Lady Milne Trophy International in Wales this weekend has been selected as follows: E McGowan and F McQuaker, C Peploe and V Guy, J Mercer and A Martin.
American football
Holders East Kilbride Pirates scored a record 86-0 home win over Lothian Raiders in the second week of the Scottish Gridiron League at Brancumhall. Dundee Whalers started their campaign with a 19-6 home win over Stirling Broncos at Dens Park.
Motorsport
SCOTTISH Indycar racer Dario Franchitti believes he has finally triggered the momentum which will see him win his first race in the CART FedEx Championship after finishing fourth in the Miller Lite 200 in Milwaukee at the weekend. And he achieved it with only half-a-gallon of fuel left in his 850hp racer.
The 25-year-old from Edinburgh, whose season had threatened to stall after a glorious start to the season which saw him finish second and fifth, as well as grab his first pole position in his Honda-powered Team Kool Green racer, admits he's now back in the groove.
''I had to pay the guys back after two crashes in three races,'' the talented Scot said yesterday. Franchitti was never lower than eighth as the cars hurtled round the one-mile oval. The championship now leaves the oval circuit and heads to Detroit on Sunday for the first in a series of street circuits.
Speedway
STEWART McDonald today dons his leathers for the first time in eight months as he begins his build-up to his Scotland debut. He will ride for Scotland against the crack England Under-21 outfit at Armadale on June12, Berwick on June 13, and Glasgow on June 14 - the return of Scotland to the international arena for the first time since 1984.
Meanwhile, Mick Powell faces a hectic week as he guests for Newcastle at Stoke tonight for Sheffield at Hull on Wednesday, at Hull for Sheffield on Thursday before captaining Glasgow at Peterborough on Friday and at Edinburgh in the re-arranged KO Cup clash at Armadale on Saturday.
He also leads Glasgow against Hull at Shawfield on Sunday before jetting to Sweden on Monday for a testimonial for Wolverhampton star Michael Karlson.
Swimming
Records could fall when Commonwealth Games select Alison Sheppard competes in the Scottish Championships at the weekend. Despite her place in Kuala Lumpur being assured, the Glasgow woman will be out to produce some fast times in her continuing build-up to the Games.
On Sunday she just missed bettering her Scottish 50m freestyle record winning the British Masters Championship in Glasgow.
