A decision banning schools in Aberdeen from keeping tropical fish has been overturned following a campaign by Councillor Kate Dean, who described the original move as ''ridiculous'' and said children were missing a vital part of their education because of the ban on classroom pets.

Director of education John Stodter had claimed that keeping animals in captivity sent out the wrong message to children and was not good for the pets. Aberdeen City Council had given schools 10 months to get rid of all classroom pets when the decision was made in September, last year. But at a meeting yesterday, it was decided tropical fish would not be included in the ban.
