SINGER Jimmy Somerville is to headline a concert in Glasgow in support of the 1998 Pride Scotland march on Saturday June 13, writes Robert Hutton. The event, to raise awareness of gay issues at home and abroad, is being supported by Amnesty International.

Somerville, who sang with 1980s bands Bronski Beat and The Communards before launching a solo career, said: ''It's exciting to be doing Gay Pride in Glasgow, as it's the town of my birth. It's really great that Amnesty's involved because it will help to inform people that being able to celebrate as freely as we do is something that gays and lesbians in so many other countries and cultures can only dream of. They would never dare, through fear, to announce it so openly.''

The march is being supported by Glasgow City Council, which is contributing #8000 towards the #50,000 costs, hosting a civic reception and flying the Pride Movement's flag over the City Chambers.
