WESTERN Grasshopper will join a select band of Scottish clubs to host a European championship when they stage the men's Club Championship at Auchenhowie this weekend.
This will be the first of two consecutive appearances for Western in the event and they hope that by next spring they will have lifted Scotland to the A Division.
They will start in the basement of the three divisions but that is no reason for Western to become complacent for there are no longer easy pickings on the international arena.
Scotland's women's side no doubt share those sentiments for India, their opponents at the World Cup in Utrecht today, fell into that category just a few years ago.
They came up through the ranks and, despite failing to fulfil their potential over the past week, are nevertheless a top-quality side.
Scotland should continue their good run against the Asians having beaten them in the play-off for bronze in Harare last August, and again at the start of the World Cup.
Meanwhile, Australia's men secured their place in the semi-finals by beating Pakistan 3-1. Jay Stacy scored twice from penalty corners but their hero was keeper Damon Diletti, who brought off three world-class saves. Results:
Men: Pool A - Germany 2, Korea 1; Canada 4, India 1; New Zealand 2, Holland 4.
Pool B - England 3, New Zealand 1; Spain 4, Poland 0; Australia 3, Pakistan 1.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
