St Rule Trophy
SCOTLAND'S big-name women golfers were were left out in the cold as monsoon-like weather washed out the third and last round of the St Rule Trophy over the Old Course at St Andrews yesterday.
That left a 16-year-old Spanish girl as the winner of one of the major women's amateur tournaments in the country.
Nuria Clau, the Spanish and Moroccan girls champion from Barcelona, only had to endure the 30mph bitterly-cold North-east wind and the lashing rain for the closing holes of her second round. Before Nuria, who had shot a three-over-par 79 for a 36-hole total of three-over-par 154, could go out for the final round, the organisers reduced the tournament from three to two rounds.
Some of the players, who were last to go out and had to play their complete second rounds in the terrible conditions, were not pleased they had been compelled to go on.
''It was so bad I felt like walking in after only six or seven holes. I have no feeling left in my hands and I feel chilled to the bone,'' said Anne Laing from Vale of Leven, winner of the tournament in 1996 and the first round leader with a two-under-par 73 over the New Course on Saturday. She was blown and washed away to an 87 yesterday for 160.
''I'll probably be in bed for a week after this I'm so cold and wet,'' said Lesley Nicholson (Her-iot Watt University) who finished joint third on 157 after being the only player to match the winner's second-round 79. Final totals:

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
