The number of single parents on Income Support has fallen below a million for the first time in five years, figures released yesterday showed.

The number of lone parents on the benefit had risen from 770,000 in May 1990 to 1,022,00 in November 1996 - but fell to 982,000 in the year to November last year, according to Department of Social Security figures.

The decrease reflects the fall in unemployment, a growth in the number of jobs available, improved security in the benefits system, and demographic changes.

Social Security Secretary Harriet Harman welcomed the figures and said the Government's New Deal and childcare strategy would provide further help to single mothers who wanted to get back to work.
