US stocks slid yesterday as investors turned cautious following this week's shake-out in Asian markets and the rumbling

financial crisis in Russia.

The Dow Jones industrial

average ended down 70.25 points at 8899.95. The loss for the week was the second-biggest of the year at 214 points.

In the broad market, advancing issues led decliners by 17-to-12 on moderate volume of 556 million shares on the New York Stock Exchange. The Nasdaq composite index was off 15.73 points at 1778.89.

Analysts said the market viewed as neutral news that April

personal income rose 0.4% and spending was up 0.5%.

Economists polled by Reuters had predicted a 0.3% rise in income and a 0.5% increase in spending.
