Club Championships

WESTERN Grasshopper, the Scottish league and cup holders, have done their country proud in the European club championships, C division, at Auchenhowie in Glasgow, writes Joseph Dillon.

They have not only won all three of their group matches, scoring 41 goals in the process, but are also through to today's final against Slavia Prague, gaining promotion to the B division.

Their latest victims, the Swiss champions, Zurich Grasshopper, were played off the field in the second half as Western went into overdrive and knocked in six goals for a loss of just one.

Graham Joyce was a source of inspiration, scoring two of their goals to bring his tally to 11. Kevin Squire and Vishal Marwaha shared four more, and the triumph was sealed by strikes from Roddy Philp, Marwaha, and Scott McArtney.

Western also registered a 7-0 victory on Saturday, when they again struck their best form in the second half to beat the Finnish club Espoo. Joyce scored his third successive hat trick in that game, when Marwaha and Meredith shared four more goals.
