RANGERS chairman David Murray last night dismissed suggestions that the club had made a bid for Newcastle striker, Alan Shearer.

Murray denied that England's World Cup captain had been taken to Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire in one of the Rangers chairman's luxury cars late on Monday evening.

Shearer is staying at the five-star hotel, but made his own way there with his family for a few days holiday before he leaves for the World Cup in France.

''This story is without foundation and complete mischief making,'' said Murray. ''I haven't spoken to Alan Shearer, I haven't met him, I haven't sent one of my cars to pick him up, and I haven't made an inquiry about him.''

The club's vice-chairman, Donald Findlay, laughed off suggestions at the club's so-called interest in Shearer. Findlay said: ''This is news to me. It would seem the poor bloke can't go anywhere for a quiet drink.''

No-one was available for comment at Newcastle United, with manager Kenny Dalglish and chief executive Freddie Fletcher on holiday. However, club sources have made it clear Shearer is not for sale and was a key part of Dalglish's future plans.

Newcastle officials realise that any sale of Shearer would cause a revolt among their fans and also damage the club's standing on the stock exchange.

Meantime, Rangers have released provisional details of a pre-season tour to Norway.

It will be new manager Dick Advocaat's first chance to see his players in a match.

Fixtures are planned against FC Molde on June 28, Asane on June 30, and Vossk on July 2.
