Ian Bannen killed in crash

ACTOR Ian Bannen died yesterday in a road accident on the shores of Loch Ness during a holiday with his wife.

The couple's car was found overturned in a ditch on the Fort Augustus to Inverness road yesterday afternoon.

By the time the emergency services arrived, 71-year-old Bannen had died from his injuries and his wife, Marilyn, 53, was unconscious. They were one of the film industry's most devoted couples.

She was taken by air ambulance to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness for emergency treatment.

The couple, who lived on the Isle of Wight, were taking a holiday from filming in the Glasgow area. Bannen, who was born in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, had been on location at the former Canniesburn Hospital on the latest Peter Capaldi project, Strictly Sinatra.

The accident happened at an area known locally as Knockies Straight.

Bannen had just found new international success as the star of the film Waking Ned but was probably best known from TV's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and playing Dr Cameron in the popular Dr Finlay series on Scottish Television. He received a lifetime achievement award from Bafta in 1996.

Tributes were last night pouring in from friends and admirers in show business and Scottish public life.
