FORMER Runrig singer Donnie Munro failed last night to win selection for Labour in the by-election in Glasgow Anniesland to succeed Mr Donald Dewar in the Scottish Parliament.

He was defeated by Glasgow Councillor Bill Butler, whose wife Patricia Ferguson is the Deputy Presiding Officer in Holyrood and MSP for Glasgow Maryhill.

Mr Butler emerged victorious after a three-way contest involving Mr Munro and Cumbernauld lawyer Ian Smart. He polled 96 votes to Mr Munro's 39 and Mr Smart's five.

The decision represented another political setback for Mr Munro, who has twice failed to win the Ross, Skye, and Inverness West seat.
