Matt Jansen's cool finish nicked a point for Blackburn at Ipswich. The England under-21 striker lobbed Matteo Sereni in 54 minutes to cancel out Alun Armstrong's first-half opener.
George Burley's side have won just once in five games this season going into their first European tie in 19 years against Torpedo Moscow this week.
Ipswich's customary fluency produced early chances, and they were ahead on the quarter-hour, as Jim Magilton orchestrated a swift raid. The Northern Ireland internationalist strode forward and slipped Finidi George in behind Alan Mahon, the winger's pace allowing him to lift a shot over the advancing Friedel. The ball hit the bar but fell to Armstrong, who volleyed in from eight yards.
Blackburn came into it and Graeme Souness' visitors showed even greater purpose on the resumption. After 53 minutes they were level.
Chris Makin's mistake was pounced upon by Tugay, whose chip set Jansen racing clear of John McGreal, and he kept his cool to lob over Sereni.
Kevin Phillips was involved in an ugly incident during the goalless draw between Aston Villa and Sunderland when he elbowed Lee Hendrie in the face.
The striker, who had been booked earlier for a nasty late challenge on the same player, caught Hendrie with an elbow as the pair challenged for a ball and left the Villa midfielder with a thick lip.
Referee Uriah Rennie missed the incident, and Phillips escaped a red card, but the Sunderland striker may yet face disciplinary action if the FA decide to view video replays.
Hendrie said afterwards: ''We both went for a ball and I got an elbow in my face. I told Kev it was out of order and he said: `I thought you were going to do me.' But I wouldn't have done that and he just apologised at the end and that was it.''
Phillips refused to speak about the incident and his manager, Peter Reid, insisted he had not seen it. Reid said: ''I can't condone the use of an elbow, but I honestly didn't see it. If I had seen it, I would comment on it.''
Villa manager John Gregory described Hendrie as ''battered and bruised'' but said he had missed the elbowing incident. ''It surprises me,'' he said. ''I wouldn't think Kevin Phillips had it in him.''
