On the bluest days, you could be forgiven for thinking that Auchrannie Spa Resort is the dream home of an ex-pat in the south of Spain.
But this is Arran. Just 50 minutes from Ardrossan by Cal Mac, with your destination no more than five minutes from Brodick Pier.
The building's mix of baronial and Moorish architecture makes for a striking exterior and sets it apart from its older sister across the way, the more traditional Auchrannie Country House Hotel.
This is the funkier little sister, the sporty one who likes wearing designer clothing and has a more casual approach to life.
The 36 rooms reflect this in their design, with subtle shades of purple and gold complementing an update of the Art Deco theme. With fabrics that are wonderfully touchable, the welcome touch of Arran Aromatics in the bathrooms and a particularly ingenious plughole design, the feeling is one of getting much more than you've paid for.
The resort has been thoughtfully designed with families in mind. The children's pool is within easy sight of both the main pool and a juice bar, where parents can relax in different ways.
The games hall and fitness areas are not only a great way to let off steam, but the ideal method for working up an appetite.
Guests can eat at Cruize in the spa resort which offers a choice to please the pickiest of children. There's pizza, pasta and a salad bar as well as a more formal menu for those who are looking for finer dining in a more relaxed atmosphere.
They can also book a table across at the country house hotel in the Garden Restaurant. This lives up to its two AA rosettes, with beautifully cooked food, presented well but providing the extra touches that make dining more of an experience than a simple necessity.
The offer of a delicate chef's pre-starter is not uncommon in restaurants of this standard but a little pre-dessert was a particularly delightful addition.
The only exercise you need now is a short walk back to your room in the spa resort.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
