s Sally Goldsmith has given herself an outside chance of an Olympic marathon place with a super run in the Bologna Marathon in Italy.
The 34-year-old teacher, who now lives in Verona, beat her best by more than five minutes with a time of 2hr 34min 14sec, putting her fourth in the current British rankings, seven seconds ahead of one of the leading contenders, Suzanne Rigg, and 24 seconds behind third-ranked Briton, Scotland's Karen Macleod.
Scotland's Liz McColgan, the top Briton, has already been named for Atlanta in July, leaving two places to be filled.

Golf
SCOTLAND'S Curtis Cup player Janice Moodie put together a three-under-par 213 total to win the Arizona Invitational College event at Tucson. The 22-year-old, who is studying at San Jose State University in California, shot rounds of 74, 67 and 72 to finish two ahead of American Kelli Kuehne.
Another Scot, Mhairi McKay was joint ninth on 221.

Squash
COLIN Hamilton (SSRC) and Lisa McKenna (Edinburgh Sports Club), the No.1 seeds, defend the Scottish Junior championships at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh this weekend.
The boys' event has added significance as it is a final chance to impress team manager Pat Nicol before he names the team for this summer's World Junior championships in Cairo. Hamilton and No.2 seed Gavin Grant (Skean Dhu) will both be over age for that event, but Alan Tasker (Kirkcaldy), Chris Small (Dalgety Bay), Daniel Knowles (Colinton Castle), Niall MacKinnon and Scott Goldie (Bridge of Allan) will be fighting for places in the four-strong squad.
In the girls' championship, McKenna is aiming to celebrate her selection for the Scottish senior team for the European Championships in Amsterdam in May with a repeat of last year's win.
Snooker
JIMMY White has dropped out of the top 16 in the latest provisional world ranking list. The 33 year-old, who started this season ranked No.7 in the world, is at No.18 following last week's European Open.
White has three ranking tournaments this term - the Singha Thailand Open, which starts on Monday, the British Open and the Embassy World Championship - to save his status among the elite. Provisional top 16 (figure in brackets denotes position at start of season):

HERIOT Watt's campaign in the British Universities women's championship takes them to Sunderland today for a semi-final against holders Loughborough. ``This will be a meeting between the top two sides left in the competition,'' according to Heriot Watt manager Eugene Connelly who envisages the winners having no difficult in disposing of either Cambridge or Birmingham in the final.

TIM Henman, ranked world No.79, had one of the best wins of his career when he beat Jan Siemerink, of Holland, 7-6, 7-6 in the first round of the ATP Tour event in Rotterdam yesterday.

BRIAN Sutherland of West Calder, the newly crowned triple Scottish Junior champion, will begin a two week long sortie into Europe today when he flies to Haarlem for the Dutch Junior Open.
The leading light in Scotland's victorious Finlandia Cup team will then head to the German Junior Open in Bottrop, where he will be joined by Helen Blair of Longniddry and Kathryn Graham of Fauldhouse.
Stirling University's Bruce Flockhart begins a similar hectic period with less than three weeks to go before the cut-off point for Olympic selection.
The 23-year-old flew to the Swedish Open in Malmo yesterday in a bid to boost his world ranking spot and will then return to Britain for next week's All-England Championships.
