ROUND-UP
NEWCASTLE'S double dream ended with a penalty shootout defeat against Chelsea in an FA Cup third-round replay at St James's Park last night. The sides were locked at 2-2 at the end of extra-time before Chelsea, denied victory in the original tie by Les Ferdinand's injury time equaliser, won the sudden-death competition 4-2.
The match was dominated by penalties in normal time after Belgian defender Philippe Albert gave the Premiership leaders the advantage after 41 minutes. Newcastle defender Darren Peacock was sent off for his second bookable offence just after the hour mark before Dennis Wise equalised a minute later with a penalty.
Chelsea restored parity for just two minutes before Peter Beardsley gave Newcastle the lead again from the spot. Ruud Gullit took the tie into extra time in 88 minutes. It was the first time Kevin Keegan's side have failed to win in front of their own fans this season.
Arsenal also suffered a replay upset against Sheffield United. The first division side, who have not lost since Howard Kendall took over at Bramall Lane last month, clinched a memorable victory through striker Carl Veart's winner after 68 minutes.
John Ebbrell rescued cup holders Everton from extra time and penalties with a late winner at Stockport. A surprise exit for Joe Royle's side looked on the cards when the second division side forged into the lead through Matthew Bound. Everton calmed their nerves with two goals in as many minutes after the interval through Duncan Ferguson and Graham Stuart.
But Stockport equalised through Alun Armstrong with two minutes left - only for Ebbrell to end their hopes of extra time with the winner a minute later.
Manchester City shrugged off relegation worries to record their biggest win of the season against first division promotion candidates Leicester at Maine Road. City romped to a 5-0 victory thanks to goals from Uwe Rosler, Georgi Kinkladze, Niall Quinn, Steve Lomas, and Gerry Creaney, and face a trip to Coventry in the next round.
Nottingham Forest also made easy work of a 2-0 victory over Stoke, Kevin Campbell and Stuart Pearce sealing a home tie against Oxford. Tottenham's Teddy Sheringham took his scoring tally for the season to 20 with a hat trick in the 5-1 hammering of Hereford at White Hart Lane.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
