MR Alex Lyle, father of former Open and US Masters champion Sandy Lyle, has died in hospital in Shropshire, aged 75.

He had been visited by his son at the weekend. Sandy Lyle left to drive back to his home in Dolphinton, Lanarkshire, when hospital reports indicated his father's condition was improving.

However, he was home barely an hour when he received a call to say his father's condition had de- teriorated again. He arrived back in Shropshire after his father had died.

Alex Lyle was one of four sons of a Glasgow farmer who created Clober Golf Club, Milngavie, out of a few fields - because he heard a neighbouring farmer had plans to do something similar.

All four sons became professional golfers with the late Walter a well-known figure at Littlehill. Alex Lyle and his wife Agnes left for Hawkstone Park, Shropshire, in 1955 and he remained there until he retired 10 years ago.

In 1967 Alex, who never doubted his son's astonishing talent, joined a consortium of local businessmen who bought Hawkstone Park's 36-hole complex and hotel and he remained a director until 1988, the year Sandy won the Masters.
