A UNIVERSITY caught up with lost time yesterday when four antique clocks were re-installed in its historic tower. The 146-year-old timepieces were removed from the tower of St Salvator's in St Andrew's University last year for restoration work.

Yesterday, contractors used a crane to lift the clocks' faces back into position on the sixteenth century tower. The restoration was made possible by a donation from Mrs Cookie Matheson of St Andrews, a supporter of the university. St Andrews University has also received #50,000 from Fife Environment Trust for restoration work to the chapel.

The clocks were made and installed by clockmakers James Ritchie and Son of Edinburgh in 1853. Although the warranty certainly ran out some time ago, the firm was happy to take the clocks back to its workshops for repair.
