AS a first response to the 22-11 defeat by Glasgow on Wednesday
evening, the Fijians have reverted to a winning team for the
international against Scotland at Murrayfield tomorrow. The tourists
yesterday named the XV who beat the French Barbarians by 32-16 on
Sunday.
Yet 10 remain from the 18 who played against Glasgow. Esala Teleni,
the tourists' captain, of course is among them, and the No.8 will be
making his second appearance at Murrayfield, as will Severo Koroduadua,
Fiji's world cup full back. Teleni and Koroduadua were in the Fijian
team whom a non-cap Scotland XV beat by 32-12 in 1982.
Waisale Serevi, one who did not allow himself to lose face in the
Glasgow defeat, remains at stand-off, partnering Lekima Vasuvulagi, a
replacement during the Hughenden match. Vasuvulagi took over when Mesake
Seavula moved out to centre late in the first half.
Seavula not only scored the first of Fiji's two tries, but he also
created a favourable impression on his opposite number, Ewan
McCorkindale. The Glasgow scrum half was surprised when he heard that
Vasuvulagi was the more likely first choice for the international.
Like Teleni and Serevi, Moses Taga and Sairusi Naituku, the Fijians'
18st props, remain from the Hughenden defeat. So does Pita Naruma, the
6ft 3in, 151!/;1/st flanker who, by reputation, is more highly rated
than he appeared on Wednesday.
Jimi Damu, injured at Hughenden, could not be considered for the
international. Nor could Tevita Vonolagi, who would have been
first-choice centre against the French Barbarians and Scotland but for
back damage earlier on the Continental leg of the tour. Two of the
chosen team, Mosese Natuilagilagi and Isikeli Waqavatu, are carrying
injuries, but the Fijians are waiting until today to see how they are.
As another reaction to the defeat in Glasgow, the tourists switched
their training ground yesterday afternoon. Instead of returning to
Heriot-Watt University's playing fields at Riccarton, they went to Moray
House's Cramond campus, overlooking the firth. The change was for no
other reason than that they could work on a powerhouse scrummage
machine, a commendation of what Glasgow had achieved in that airt.
Earlier in the day, the Scots had their work-out at Murrayfield,
private as usual on the Thursday before an international. Bob Munro,
convener of the international selection committee, reported that
everyone was fit. John Jeffrey's groin strain had cleared up, and
neither Gary Armstrong nor Graham Marshall had any recurrences of back
twinges earlier in the week. The Fijians' team is:
S Koroduadua; L Erenavula, M Natuilagilagi, N Nadruku, I Waqavatu; W
Serevi, L Vasuvulagi; M Taga, S Naivilawasa, S Naituku, I Savai, M
Rasari, P Naruma, E Teleni, captain, A Dere. Replacements -- I Torosi, I
Naituku, T Wainiqolo, N Matirawa, M Seavula, T Lovo.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
