Very sorry to hear of Alan's passing. Had lost touch. My brother and I were at school with him. We shared happy times in his family home in Dennistoun and I had a 3 month trip with him to Finland and round Europe in 1968. Had other connections including Music and youthful politics. Our thoughts are with you.

In 2012, I was very pleased to appoint Alan as Vice-President for Research and Innovation at Dublin City University. Alan held that position for five years. During that time, he contributed greatly to DCU and made many friends who appreciated his intellect, his integrity and his wicked sense of humour!
In my role as university president, I was very pleased to have Alan by my side advancing the university strategy, providing loyal support but also challenging me whenever I needed it!
The community at DCU is greatly saddened by Alan's untimely passing. He will be missed but not forgotten.
I was honoured and grateful to know and work with Alan.
I wish to convey sincere condolences to Jenny and all the family, along with Alan's many friends.
