What’s the story?

Jane McDonald: Lost in Japan.

The 1984 hit song by Alphaville?

Err, nope. That is Big in Japan. I’m talking about singer and presenter Jane McDonald’s latest travelogue on Channel 5.

Ah, that makes more sense.

Indeed. The opening episode sees McDonald arrive in Tokyo where a lofty perch at the 230-metre-high (755ft) Shibuya Sky observation deck provides a bird’s-eye view of the spectacular metropolis she is about to explore.

The Japanese capital sees the uber-modern and traditional rub shoulders, from glittering skyscrapers to historic temples. And McDonald can’t wait to soak up all it has to offer.

What’s on the itinerary?

She attends a sumo match, eats noodles in a “princess-based fantasy world” cafe and visits Shinto shrines to learn how deities are asked for blessings and good luck.

And, of course, no trip would be complete without our intrepid presenter picking up a microphone in the country where the global phenomenon of karaoke was invented.

Do they find McDonald?

She’s not actually lost. It is a metaphor. For an immersive experience.

Quick question. Who travels more: Susan Calman or Jane McDonald?

It is a close-run thing. I couldn’t possibly call it. Both are racking up the passport stamps.

When can I watch?

Jane McDonald: Lost in Japan begins on Channel 5, Friday, 9pm. Catch up on My5.
