What’s it called?

Radio 1 Vintage

What’s it about?

It’s a series of podcasts celebrating 50 years of Radio 1 and culled from the “pop-up” station that was run for three days in 2017 to mark that half century. Among the DJs and presenters whose shows have been collected into the podcasts are John Peel, Mark and Lard, Trevor Nelson, Annie Nightingale and Ed Stewart, though there’s also a place for UK Garage pioneers The Dreem Team and Ranking Miss P, aka Rita Marley’s younger sister Margaret Anderson, who hosted a reggae show on Sunday nights in the early 1980s. Annie Nightingale, Mary Anne Hobbs and Kid Jensen are among those introducing the John Peel episode and paying tribute to the great man, and it’s a pretty good place to start.

What’s so good about it?

The music, the chat and the jingles. Especially the jingles.

Fun fact …

Rats can’t vomit claim Mark and Lard in a snippet from one of their shows.

Best bits

It’s all pretty upbeat for the most part, though Nicky Campbell’s description of seeing John Peel alone in the studio, lit only by a desk lamp and listening to Aretha Franklin’s version of You’ll Never Walk Alone on the Monday after the Hillsborough disaster strikes a sombre note.
