Shedload Theatre will be performing Just William's Luck at Underbelly, Cowgate - Iron Belly, during August.
- What is your Fringe show about?
It’s an inventive stage adaptation of a novel by Richmal Crompton that was itself already adapting a film that had adapted three short stories… by Richmal Crompton.
(Or) It’s about five misfit youths, who, armed only with the best of intentions and incredibly limited funds set about trying to tell a great story and create a bit of theatre.
(Or) It’s a play about a well meaning young boy and his gang of friends that plot, fight, propose, scream and haunt all for the want of complete social justice and bicycles.
(Actually it’s all three)
- How many times/many years have you appeared at the Fringe?
This will be my third year performing at the Fringe.
- What’s your most memorable moment from the Fringe?
I don’t think there is one specific moment for me. My first year encapsulated everything that I’ve come to love about the whole experience – the comradery, the adventure and a sense of belonging and acceptance amongst such a wealth of artists from all over the world.
- What’s the worst thing about the Fringe?
The cost involved – or perhaps the guilt you feel after missing a friends show that you’d been promising them for weeks you’d see! There’s always one!
- If you were not a performer what would you be doing?
Drawing caricatures or making obscure sculptures and puppets.
- How do you prepare for a performance?
I’m not one for late nights before a show. You’ll usually never find me out past midnight in Edinburgh (boring I know) I like to be well rested – especially for a physical show such as this. Other than that, just remembering to breathe, some simple warm ups and an energetic cast song/game that we are all quite fond of.
- Favourite thing about being in Edinburgh?
During Fringe? It’s a cliché, but the atmosphere is electric, the people you meet are gorgeous- The buzz of being here during the festival is unreal. Otherwise, I could (and have) spent hours just walking up and down the streets and staring at the wonderful buildings; it’s so unlike where I grew up.
- What’s the most Scottish thing you’ve ever done?
I’m not sure if this counts; but climbing down Arthur’s Seat, Irn Bru in hand, without the aid of the pathway is the first thing that springs to mind... I may have afterwards devoured a scotch pie, but I could be remembering it wrong for embellishments sake…
- Favourite Scottish food/drink?
Stovies! Hearty, comforting and it reminds me of my first fringe and a good friend.
- Sum up your show in three words
Joyful imaginative anarchy.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
