These are the faces of the soldiers who were awarded the highest honour for putting their lives on the line during World War I.

A remarkable new book commemorates all of those who earned the Victoria Cross, Britain's highest military award for valour, from 1914 to 1918 and many of the 628 recipients were Scottish.

All of their stories bear witness to astonishing bravery and selflessness.

Today, on the eve of Remembrance Sunday, HeraldScotland lists them all.
