THE bald information above will tell many readers nothing about this CD, which has come to me on a white label disc, in a plain envelope with a sheet telling me that the booklet notes (no booklet is present) are by the pianist, Boris Giltburg. What has happened to this once-superb Naxos product, with its monthly illustrated booklet of releases and sheets of issues on associated labels? It all seems to have gone down the tubes. I couldn’t even tell you who my contact is at the company. That was unthinkable 10 years ago. So let me tell you that the sonatas are The Pathetique, The Waldstein and the transcendent final Sonata, opus 111. And let me tell you further that these performances by Giltburg, who is coming to the RSNO this season, are staggering, among the best I have ever heard. The young man is a complete original. I will return to all subjects enshrined in this review.
