Renfrewshire joins the Scottish International Storytelling Festival for the first time this year with Warp & Weft – Kilbarchan Woven in Story & Song, performed on October 24 at 7:30pm in Kilbarchan Performing Arts Centre in the town’s historic Steeple Square. The event, which tells the town’s history and folktales from the time of St Barchan in the 6th century to the present day, features local storyteller Anne Pitcher and singer, songwriter and author Ewan McVicar with members of Kilbarchan Pipe Band and a chorus from local singing group Village Voices. kilbarchanwarpandweft.webs.com

Folk singer-guitarist Ewan McLennan plays a concert at the Glad Café in Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow on Friday, October 23 as part of a five-date Scottish tour. McLennan, pictured, who was born in London but grew up in Edinburgh, released his third album, Stories Still Untold, towards the end of last year and appeared with his trio at Celtic Connections in January. As well as his Glasgow concert he plays dates at Dunfermline Folk Club (October 21); Old Bridge Inn, Aviemore (22nd); Hippodrome, Eyemouth (24th); and a house concert in Edinburgh (27th).

Pianist Philip Clouts brings his quartet north this month for four concerts as part of a tour to mark the release of his new album, Umoya. Cape Town-born, Dorset-based Clouts’ merging of soul-jazz grooves with influences from around the world has captured the attention of American classical label Odradek and Umoya is released on October 23 as one of the first items in the company’s newly created jazz catalogue. The quartet, which features saxophonist Samuel Eagles, bassist Alex Keen and Yamaha Jazz Scholarship-winning drummer Dave Ingamells, appears at Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh on Monday, October 26; Woodend Bowling and Lawn Tennis Club, Glasgow (27th); Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline (28th); and Blue Lamp, Aberdeen (29th).

Swedish trio Väsen return to Scotland for two concerts in November. The group, who won five-star reviews from both The Scotsman and The Herald when they appeared at Edinburgh’s Tradfest celebration of the traditional arts earlier this year, specialise in Swedish dance music and particularly champion the nyckelharpa, or keyed fiddle. They appear at Kilbarchan Performing Arts Centre on Tuesday, November 10 and Acoustic Music Club, Kirkcaldy the following evening.
