The man Esquire magazine dubbed "the most fearless man in comedy" returns to these shores from the USA for a month long tour that kicks off in Glasgow. Doug Stanhope (pictured) has already sold out the Hammersmith Apollo for his first performances in the UK since 2012 and the baker's dozen of gigs already announced also include another London appearance at O2 Brixton Academy and a brace at The Lowry in Manchester. A favourite of Ricky Gervais, Sarah Silverman and the late Robin Williams, Stanhope was also the Voice of America on Charlie Booker's Newswipe on BBC4. The tour opens at Glasgow's O2 Academy on October 2 and 3, but The Herald can announce that these will be preceded on October 1 by a secret warm-up gig in the intimate venue of The Tron in Edinburgh. Details of how to acquire tickets for this up-close-and-personal encounter with Doug Stanhope will be in The Herald next week, so watch this space. As the man himself has said: "When I go onstage, it's like I'm leading you into battle. You're not all going to be here at the end."

Liddell, a former director of Edinburgh International Book Festival, steps down in November, and Armour will take up the post the following month.

She comes to the job having held senior positions with the British Council, Scottish Development International and the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council. She said yesterday: "Edinburgh's collaborative approach is admired around the world, and it's an exciting time to be joining the team."
