Andrew Ryan discusses heckles, wet towels and Scottish crowds.
Tell us about your Fringe show
It’s called ‘Perfectly Inadequate’ it’s about how I’ve come to terms with liking myself, even if I make mistakes or feel bad about things in life.
Best thing about the Fringe?
Not having to travel the length of the UK for gigs. I can stay in the one place for three weeks.
Worst thing about the Fringe?
Being away from home for three weeks.
How many years have you been coming to the Fringe?
This is my fourth year. Every year I say I will never come back. I just lie to myself all the time.
Favourite Fringe venue?
The one I’m performing in this year. I’ve not actually seen it yet. But it’s my favourite one so far.
Best Fringe memory?
During my first show in my first year on the Free Festival. Three people came in and sat down. I was performing in the back of a pub. After a few minutes they asked me was I a waiter, they wanted to order food. I told them it was a comedy show they got up and left.
Best heckle?
My Dad shouted ‘ that’s not true” about a story I was telling about my mum. I could not put him down as he lets me borrow his car when I go home.
Craziest on stage experience?
I once spoke to a ‘couple’ on the front row of a gig. The bloke was not speaking much and was being really shy, so I left them and moved on. During the interval I was told by security that another woman approached him and started shouting at him. Turned out he was married and having an affair. The woman who shouted at him was his wife’s friend. She was sat at the back on a hen do and recognised his voice. He had left after the confrontation.
What’s on your rider?
A bottle of water and Wi-Fi.
How do you wind down after a show?
I complain about the bit of the audience that didn’t laugh at to whoever is near me.
What do you love about Scotland?
If Scottish people like you they really like you. If they don’t like you they let you know. I like the honesty.
What do you like about Edinburgh?
The hills the rain, the busy streets I GET NONE OF THAT IN LONDON.
What’s the most Scottish thing you’ve done?
I’ve put money on England to lose at football.
What kind of jokes do a Scottish crowd seem to respond to?
Good ones. They love their comedy.
Favourite joke?
I have one about leaving a wet towel on the bed. You can see it at 7.50pm at Studio 4, Assembly gardens every night during the festival.
Andrew Ryan will perform at the Assembly Studios George Square on August 19–30.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
