Amok

(XL Recordings)

An indie supergroup consisting of Radiohead's Thom Yorke, his producer Nigel Godrich, Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beck drummer Joey Waronker and Brazilian percussionist Mauro Refosco, AFP toured with Yorke in 2009 to perform his sparse solo album Eraser, and in 2010 gathered in an LA studio for a three-day recording session. This richly textured nine-song set is the result, though even Yorke admits it's hard to distinguish between what was captured live and what he created subsequently on his laptop. Yorke has spoken about listening to a lot of Fela Kuti prior to the recording session and there's an infectious Afro-beat running through tracks like Reverse Running and Before Your Very Eyes. He's talked about wanting to make a dance record, too, and that impulse is discernible on tracks like Unless. If this is dance music, however, it veers more towards the Four Tet end of the spectrum: David Guetta it ain't. A boon for fans of Radiohead, then – and an interesting enough sonic brew for the agnostics to sup from.
