If you’ve never visited Fairmont St Andrews before, it’s difficult to understand just what a mammoth entity it is. Even the journey down the long driveway is filled with drama, as the rugged coast opens up ahead of you and the iconic hotel comes into view.
With 520 acres of private grounds, two world-class golf courses, extensive spa facilities, and more than 200 rooms, Fairmont St Andrews almost a separate village within itself.
But is it impersonal, in the way some large hotels can be? Not a chance. From the minute you pull into the car park, the genuine and gregarious staff will greet you with a smile and offer help in any way they can. Regular shuttles run into St Andrews town, for those who want to explore the local area, but there is plenty to keep you busy within the extensive, impeccably manicured hotel grounds. Take a wander down to the clifftops to enjoy the sea air, watch golfers sinking their shot on the 18th hole, or enjoy a drink from the outdoor bar while watching the sun slip behind the horizon.
Even if the weather doesn’t play ball (which given this summer so far, could be doubtful), there’s no need to panic. At the Fairmont St Andrews you can find plenty to do in the rain: an indoor golf simulator, the Zephyr sports bar, a 16-metre indoor pool, a well-equipped gym, an on-site La Cucina Italian restaurant … the list goes on.
Travelling with kids? Even better, as the hotel has its own soft play, arcade games, air hockey, games console station – and the piece de resistance, a cinema that’s available for guests to use at their leisure, choosing from one of the many films available in the library.
Family rooms have plenty of space to accommodate parents and children, while all rooms come with luxury touches like Nespresso machines and plush bathrobes as standard. One of the highlights of my trip to the Fairmont St Andrews was watching the sunset through the window from the comfort of my huge double bed, followed by a leisurely bath using the luxury products provided in the bathroom.
The next morning, I relished in the extravagance and indulgence of a Fairmont St Andrews breakfast at the Squire Restaurant, which includes fresh fruit and pastries, smoked salmon, dozens of cheeses, bacon and sausages and an omelette station where a chef is on hand to create eggs in any way you want.
Then it was off to the spa, to enjoy a swim, sauna and steam before a dip in the hot tub. I glanced in at the massive gym, but decided on this occasion to forego a run on the treadmill in favour of a lie down in the specially-appointed relaxation suite.
Truly, a trip to the Fairmont St Andrews felt a world away from Glasgow, despite taking only 90 minutes to travel there by car.
