1. Illuminight
Dean Castle Country Park, Kilmarnock, until November 19

This brand new fire and light spectacular in East Ayrshire promises a magical experience for all the family. State-of-the art lighting installations with specially-commissioned visual and music effects will show the park in a whole new light. The 1.5km trail will take visitors through the historic woodland, alongside the Kilmarnock Water and through the new wetland areas highlighting the rivers, ponds and trees of the Country Park and, of course, Dean Castle itself. Quality local food and drink can be enjoyed through the park, with the option to toast marshmallows among other seasonal offerings.

2. Glasgow Green Fireworks
Glasgow Green, Sunday

The city’s biggest and best fireworks display is back where, from 5pm, visitors will be able to enjoy food and drink stalls and the funfair before the big explosive finale. The catering and funfair will run from 5pm to 9pm with the display taking off at 7.30pm. Event is free to attend.

3. Woodland Light Experience
Ballochruin Farm, Balfron, until November 12

Enjoy an autumnal walk in the woods and experience 14 acres of Scottish woodland as never before. Visitors can stroll around the woodland paths and be in awe of Reflections, the light and sound show, with beautiful lighting effects featuring the natural landscape, light, music and water.

4. Edinburgh Short Film Festival
Various venues, until November 11

Devoted to screening short film from Edinburgh, Scotland and around the world, the event evolved from the Leith Short Film Festival in 2011 and has shown just about everything - from the first film made in Somalia in 20 years, to Oscar-nominated shorts from Australia, the US and Ireland, as well as short films smuggled out of China and Iran. The event has hosted visiting film-makers from China, Russia, Italy, Spain, Germany, Holland and all over the UK. This year’s films range from award-winning neo-noir animation from India, to thrillers from Iran and Scottish black comedy.

5. Dundee Science Festival

Having grown to be one of the largest events in Tayside, the festival aims to engage and inspire the whole community through its celebration of science and lifelong learning across the city of Dundee, attracting people from all ages and backgrounds. With a key objective to increase science in the community and to widen access to science, visitors should gear themselves up for over 60 hands-on and amazing events, from interactive live shows, science busking and maker workshops, to storytime and open chat sessions.

6. Big Girls Don’t Cry
SEC Centre, Glasgow, tomorrow

A tribute to Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, this unmissable musical spectacular has been authentically recreated with support from a live band to capture the iconic sounds of New Jersey’s finest. With hits such as “Walk Like a Man,” “Rag Doll” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” audiences will experience the iconic sounds that propelled Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons into super stardom during the ‘60s and ‘70s as they sold an incredible 100 million records worldwide.

7. Glasgow Horror Festival
Classic Grand, Glasgow, Saturday and Sunday

Two days and nights of horror entertainment spread over the two floors, the event is aiming to bring the international horror festival and convention vibe to Glasgow, with some Scottish twists. The bottom floor will be home to a convention-style horror market, with comics, merchandise, art and food. The main hall will be showcasing the best of international horror, from scary short programs and feature films, to a gory drag show. With the best independent horror films from around the world set to be screened as well, this event is a must for fans of the horror genre.

8. Scottish Ballet: Stravinsky
Eden Court Theatre, Inverness, tomorrow and Saturday

Experience the bold, sensual power of Igor Stravinsky’s scores, performed by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. A programme of two dramatically contrasting ballets - The Fairy’s Kiss (Le Baiser de la Fée) and The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du Printemps). Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale The Ice Maiden, The Fairy’s Kiss tells the story of a boy cursed with a kiss, destined for immortality. Christopher Hampson’s The Rite of Spring, on the other hand, sees Hampson use three dancers to reinvent the now infamous story of remorseless human sacrifice with brutal physicality and primal energy.

9. Dundee Preserves
The McManus, Dundee, until January 2018

This exciting new exhibition provides a glimpse into how curators and conservators care for, research, store, document and conserve the city’s collections, providing an interesting look into how things work behind closed doors. Dundee Preserves showcases some of the valuable work that is being done to research and document items that were previously little known or whose significance had been lost over time and just how staff work to minimise the risk of deterioration.

Admission is free and the exhibition is open from 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 12.30pm to 4.30pm on Sunday.
