The Green Room

97 Canal Street, Perth

What is it: This once reputedly rough and ready pub was extended and transformed four years ago into one of Perth's most popular late night destinations. There are three sections: a small bar downstairs focusing on beer; a larger upstairs bar with one of the most impressive spirit selections I've seen; and a live music room through the back. The decor is an eclectic mix of classic pub and live music bar, with band posters, mismatched furniture, exposed brick and, of course, a lot of green.

Interesting fact: Perth is the birthplace of many of Scotland's biggest whisky brands, and was a thriving market town during the 19th century, when shop owners like Matthew Gloag (The Famous Grouse), Arthur Bell (Bells Whisky) John Dewar (Dewars Whisky) and many others started to mix (blend) single malt and grain whiskies together for their customers.

Verdict: I love finding places like this. The Green Room knows exactly what it is and doesn't try to be anything else. Hard work has gone into build its loyal following. There's a strong spirits and beer collection, live music six days a week and friendly staff who know their stuff and are clearly proud of what they are doing. Definitely worth a visit.

Drink: This is what sets the Green room apart. Of course the constant live music is a big draw, but the drinks selection is amazing. With over 230 whiskies ranging from £2.50 to £85 a nip, 120 gins and 50 rums it is one of the most comprehensive I have seen.

Food: None on offer, although you do get a free beach bucket of crisps to keep you going. Its all about the live music and quality booze here.

Prices: Good value for money. Yes, some of the spirits are expensive but you get what you pay for. Lots of specials on to keep the locals happy.

Children: Probably best for the grown-ups.

Alfresco: No outside area.

Perfect for: Letting the staff guide you through the massive drinks selection then heading through the back for some live music.

Avoid if: You were after some grub and a quiet night.
